Peter Jackson is setting the record straight on Ryan Gosling\u2019s recasting in 2009\u2019s\u00a0The Lovely Bones<\/i>.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival, the Oscar-winning director addressed years of speculation surrounding the\u00a0Project Hail Mary\u00a0<\/i>actor\u2019s claim that he was dropped from the film after gaining 60 pounds for the role, insisting the fault was never Gosling\u2019s.<\/p>\n
Jackson told journalist Didier Allouch that recasting decisions ultimately fall on filmmakers, not actors. \u201cAnytime we recast an actor, it’s actually our fault because we didn’t get the casting right and we cast the wrong person for a role. It’s not because they did anything wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n
The comments revisit Gosling\u2019s 2010 revelation to\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter<\/i>, where he said he and Jackson had \u201ca different idea\u201d of how the grieving father at the centre of\u00a0The Lovely Bones<\/i>\u00a0should physically appear. The Notebook star admitted he \u201cgot it wrong\u201d after intentionally gaining weight for the role, which eventually went to Mark Wahlberg.<\/p>\n
Jackson was quick to praise Gosling, adding, \u201cRyan is a fantastic actor, as we know\u2026 occasionally we make our own mistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n
The 2009 adaptation of Alice Sebold\u2019s bestselling novel starred Saoirse Ronan, Rachel Weisz and Susan Sarandon.<\/p>\n
Ronan later reflected on the switch during a 2024 interview, saying the split was \u201ctotally valid\u201d and \u201cnot personal.\u201d<\/p>\n
